Benares At Night
Ram KUMAR
In 1961, Ram Kumar visited the holy city of Varanasi. This visit upset the artist and brought about a profound change in his pictorial style. It led him to grasp in different ways the sensations he had discovered. He then gradually moved away from figuration and created a series of landscapes inspired by the city of Benares. This painting "Untitled (Benares at Night)" is part of this series. Despite the evocative title, it is easy to see the absence of the usual constituents of reality, the human figure is also absent. All that remains is a landscape of dramatic intensity and austere brilliance.
