Ram KUMAR
Indian writer-artist, Ram Kumar has long been recognised as the avant-garde abstract painter of his time. Associated with the Progressive Artists' Group of Bombay founded by the famous Francis Newton Souza with Maqbool Fida Husain, Jamini Roy, Thyeb Mehta, Sayed Haider Raza and Vasuedo S. Gaitonde. This talented Indian artist was born in Shimla, the capital of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. Surrounded by a large number of siblings, he first studied economics at St Stephen College in Delhi. It was during an evening in 1945, in the company of his friends from St Stephen College, that he discovered an art exhibition. This discovery was one of the triggers of his interest in art. Discovery of the artistic world In 1948, while Ram Kumar was taking classes at the Sharda Ukil School of Art, he gave up a job as a banker to pursue a career in the art world. His teacher, Sailoz Mukherjee, enabled him to discover still lifes made from live models and thus consolidate his attraction to creation. Moreover, when he started at this school, he met Sayed Haider Raza with whom he became friends. From then on, he succeeded in going to Paris to study under the aegis of Fernand Léger and André Lhote. Sensitivity through colour In the course of his career, the Indian artist painted many landscapes, often moving from naturalism to abstraction without ever succumbing to either. To achieve his compositions, Ram Kumar mainly uses oil paints, presenting a variety of shades of blue, grey or dark yellow. For example, he will create Orphans, Yellow Summer or Kashmir. These are all pieces of great sensitivity but also of high technicality that Barnie's is able to estimate for you. The human being at the heart of his preoccupations At the beginning, the human condition was one of Ram Kumar's main concerns. He gave the human being a central place in his early compositions by immersing it in the heart of cities. Among the works of this period, Mother, created in 1957, perfectly reflects the artist's first humanistic intentions. Little by little, the painter will integrate large bluish lines or a powerful golden yellow. This work will give his work a certain lightness, like a suspension effect, and thus guide him little by little towards abstraction. Violence and destruction During the last years of his career, the Indian painter spent much of his research in the discovery of metaphysical inspiration, transcendence and inner peace. He was inspired by trips to Mexico and the United States and consolidated his reputation as an abstract Indian painter by creating numerous decomposed, almost jagged landscapes where blocks and lines intersect, form and deform as patchwork. Among these works, Houses, Benaras or Benaras Landscape are among the major pieces of his career. As an expert, Barnie's values and buys your works by Ram Kumar. Ram Kumar appraisal and estimate Ram Kumar and his abstract works are highly sought-after, such as his work "Blue Abstract", which embodies a surrealist vision of a landscape. However, the artist does not abandon the representation of the subject. We can see it in his painting "Young Student" which remains however faithful to this taste for abstraction.
