The beginnings of a creator of style Considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century, Picasso was a great painter, draughtsman and sculptor. It was at the age of eight that the artist made his debut, encouraged by his father. In particular, he produced his first oil painting, The Little Yellow Picador. Afterwards, he travelled between Madrid, Barcelona and Malaga and in 1896 he was accepted at the Llotja School in Barcelona. During his youth it is possible to feel all the influence of Catalan modernism in his works. In the years that followed Picasso made trips to Madrid, returned to Barcelona, frequented Els quatre Gats, met Utrillo and finally reached the French capital. Cubism and Surrealism But this artist's journey did not end there. He multiplied his meetings and travels between Madrid, Barcelona and Paris. Moreover, it was in 1901 that his work was influenced by the death of a close friend, Casagemas. This tragic event led to his blue period. This was a period in which colour and a certain form of melancholy were dominant in his paintings, the major works being La Vida and Las Dos Hermanas. This was followed by the pink period, the encounters with the Stein family, the African inspiration, the conception of Cubism with Braque and also the approach to Surrealism. An international success Pablo Picasso is indeed considered to be the founder of Cubism with Georges Braque. The artist asserted himself, tried out new techniques and new materials, painted, glued, presented, represented and expressed his feelings through his works. It is a whole universe that he creates, it is all this universe and all this inventiveness which was worth to him to attract jealousy but also to increase his notoriety. Because Pablo Picasso is above all an artist who produced nearly 50,000 works including 1,885 paintings, 2,880 ceramics, 1,228 sculptures, 7,089 drawings, 342 tapestries, 150 sketchbooks and 30,000 prints such as lithographs or engravings... At the end of his life, Picasso isolated himself, and created a new fascination for the character of the Musketeer. Very quickly, he multiplied his representations of this medieval figure. His portrait "Mousquetaire Buste" is one of them, and represents wonderfully the world of the end of the painter's life. He also painted, in the same vein, the painting "Woman and Child" which adopts a more childlike style.
