The Deposition

Francis Newton Souza was influenced by the Roman Catholic Church, which is one of the reasons that led him to create works representing religious scenes, as in this painting "The Deposition", 1963. In the latter Souza depicts the scene of Christ's burial, more precisely, the moment when his body is moved. The western influence of the artist is clearly visible here, since he adopted the same composition as Titian's "Transport of Christ to the Tomb".
