Nude With Garters
Francis NEWTON SOUZA
Francis Newton Souza is considered the first modern Indian artist. He distinguished himself not only by his style, but also by the themes he tackled, nudes being among his favourites. His nudes were often erotically charged, as in this painting "Nude with garters", painted in 1963. The forms are prominent, with prominent breasts and well-defined hips. Formally, the artist's approach to colour and line has many similarities with the precepts advocated by artists such as Pablo Picasso, resulting in a work on the verge of primitivism, yet sensual and cheeky.
